Green space and heat in Indian cities
Paved, crowded neighbourhoods trap heat long after sunset. Why trees, lawns and shade inside a housing project matter more every summer.

Anyone who has walked across a parking area at four in the afternoon and then stepped under a line of trees knows the difference without needing a thermometer. Concrete, asphalt and glass absorb heat through the day and release it slowly at night, which is why a dense neighbourhood stays warm long after the surrounding countryside has cooled. This is the urban heat island, and in Indian cities it is now treated as a planning problem rather than a curiosity.
The National Disaster Management Authority's 2019 guidelines ask cities to assess what drives the heat island effect locally and to put mitigation measures into their heat action plans. By July 2026, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs told Parliament that heat action plans had been prepared by 23 states, 195 districts and 64 cities.
Green cover is being counted, and funded
Under the AMRUT programme, the same reply reported 4,171 park projects covering 18,168 acres approved, of which 3,458 parks covering 11,119 acres have been developed. Alongside them, 2,960 waterbody projects covering about 1.21 lakh acres were approved and 1,104 completed. A pilot called Building Heat Resilient Cities is assessing heat stress in 12 cities, including Nashik in Maharashtra, to identify what drives it and what to do about it.
The measures those plans reach for are consistent: cool roofs, cooling corridors, more urban green infrastructure, restored water bodies, and heat considerations built into how a place is planned in the first place.
Such measures contribute to enhancement of urban green cover, improvement of local microclimates and reduction of heat stress.
What a housing project can decide for itself
A city's tree cover is decided over decades. Inside the boundary of a housing project, the same choices are made on a drawing board in a matter of months, and they set how that place will feel for the next fifty summers.
- How much of the ground is left open and planted, rather than paved for parking and driveways.
- Whether trees are planted where people actually walk, so paths are shaded in the afternoon.
- Whether surfaces underfoot are permeable, so rain soaks in instead of running off hot concrete.
- Where the seating, the play area and the walking loop sit, and whether they catch the evening breeze or the west sun.
The everyday result
Shade and planting change when a place can be used. A shaded courtyard is usable by children at five in the evening; an unshaded one is not until much later. Cooler surroundings also mean less work for the air conditioners indoors, which is the load that peaks exactly when the grid is most stressed.
At Suburbia Estate the landscaped areas, tree-lined internal streets and the central court are not decoration around the buildings. They are the part of the project that decides what a hot afternoon feels like.
